As we pursue more active, healthy and purposeful years in “retirement”, my time spent in the “writing life” has certainly kept me busy, challenged, at times overwhelmed, but mostly excited about being able to dedicate much more time to the novels I’ve been writing.  If you have a book underway or always wanted to write a novel or a work of non-fiction, there’s no better time than the “Boomer Years”.

We’ve just released my fifth novel, A FOLLOWING SEA, and watched it quickly rise up the Amazon charts to the top 50 in the Mystery Thriller & Suspense genre in just the first few days of distribution.  The ratings and reviews on both Amazon and Goodreads have been very encouraging, averaging 4.6 out of 5 stars on both platforms.

So, six months of work not just in writing the book, but as an independent publisher, taking it from manuscript through the editing process, book file design and formatting, cover design, distribution and marketing, is now showing early signs of acceptance and reader appeal, making all the early mornings and late nights worthwhile.

I began writing fiction part-time years ago during my professional career as a marketing and advertising executive.  I managed to publish my first novel in 2005, and now have five novels in distribution with a sixth on the way later this summer.  Being able to write nearly full-time now and concentrate on the business side of independent publishing has been a wonderful way to keep more than active in this next phase of our lives.

The “writing life” is a great way to not only tap your creative energies, but also to challenge your business sense to create a good product that’s appealing to the niche of readers you chose to write for and strive to stand-out and distinguish yourself among the literally millions of other novels published each year.  It’s also not a bad side income to supplement our “retirement” years.

A FOLLOWING SEA is the second in the “Hanna Walsh and Alex Frank Low Country Thriller” series, the sequel to LIES WE NEVER SEE, that was released back in March of 2018.  That book has also jumped back up into the Top 50 on Amazon.

Here’s the blurb, (writer-speak for book description), for A FOLLOWING SEA

Hanna is still recovering from the trauma of her husband’s murder and betrayal of those she held close as Detective Alex Clark helps her find a new path and a new relationship in her life.  Their time together is soon threatened by the return of Alex’s ex-wife who is intent on making up for past sins.

Alex’s life is thrown into further chaos when his father, a shrimp boat captain out of a small waterfront town in South Carolina, is arrested for the brutal murder of a rival shrimper.  Alex finds himself in the cross-hairs of a dangerous crime element as he digs too deep into his father’s murder investigation.

While Hanna tries to help Alex and his father, she faces her own dangers when the violent husband of a young woman who has come to her free legal clinic for help, turns his wrath on her.

Will Hanna and Alex be able to navigate these dangerous waters and the dark forces that threaten not only their relationship but also their lives?
